SkinPen

A repair response, triggered on purpose.

A SkinPen is a motorized device with a sterile single use needle cartridge that moves vertically at a controlled depth. Passing it over the skin creates thousands of microscopic channels. None is an injury you can see, but together they are enough for the skin to register damage and start repairing, laying down new collagen. The result is not something the device puts in. It is something your skin builds afterward.

That mechanism sets the ceiling, and it is worth knowing before you book. Microneedling works on the surface: texture, pore appearance, fine crepiness, and scars where tethered tissue can be broken up and refilled. It does not tighten loose skin, because the energy needed to contract deeper tissue is not there. It does not fill volume. If laxity is the real concern, radiofrequency microneedling reaches deeper, and you will be pointed there rather than sold a series that cannot deliver.

An optional add-on blood draw changes what goes onto those channels, not what the device does. A small sample is drawn at the start of the appointment and prepared in the clinic. Applied to freshly channeled skin, or placed under the eye, it is meant to support the healing the needling started. It supplements the treatment. It does not replace the series.

Whether this is the right treatment for you.

Worth booking if

  • Acne scarring, particularly rolling or boxcar scars
  • Uneven texture, rough patches or enlarged looking pores
  • Fine crepey lines where volume and muscle are not the issue
  • Dull tone you want improved gradually
  • You can commit to a series and to sun protection between sessions

Probably not if

  • Loose skin along the jaw or neck, where this will underdeliver
  • Active acne, infection, eczema or open lesions in the area
  • A history of keloid scarring
  • Recent medication that affects healing, which requires a wait
  • You want one appointment to fix scarring that took years to form

What happens in the room.

  1. Cleanse, numb, and an optional blood draw

The skin is cleansed thoroughly, because anything on the surface is about to have a route underneath it. Topical anesthetic sits for about thirty minutes. If the add-on is planned, blood is drawn from your arm during that window and prepared in the clinic, which stays in the room with you.

  2. The passes

The device moves across the face in overlapping sections with depth adjusted by zone. Skin around the eye is thinner than skin over the cheek and is not treated at the same setting. You feel vibration and scratching, strongest along the jaw and forehead where bone sits close under the skin. Pinpoint bleeding in places is a normal endpoint.

  3. The add-on and walking out

If the blood-draw add-on is used, it is spread across the treated skin and massaged in, or placed in specific areas such as under the eyes. You leave red and warm, like a strong sunburn, sometimes with a film left on and instructions not to wash it off for a set number of hours. No makeup that day.

Microneedling questions.

Does it hurt?
With numbing, most people describe a scratchy vibration rather than pain. The forehead, hairline and jaw are sharpest because bone is close underneath. The numbing is why the appointment runs longer than the needling itself.
How many sessions do I need?
This is a series, spaced about four weeks apart so each round of remodeling can happen before the next. Scarring needs more sessions than tone and texture. You get the likely number before you start, not after the third one.
Is the blood-draw add-on worth the extra cost?
It is reasonable to do plain microneedling first and see how your skin responds. The add-on is a blood draw, extra time and cost, and it is intended to support healing rather than change what the device can do. Placing it under the eye is a separate step from applying it on the surface.
How long is the redness?
One to three days for most people, worst on day one, similar to a strong sunburn, then light flaking. Book it for a day you do not need to look your best that evening.
Will this tighten my jawline?
Not meaningfully. Microneedling works on the surface. Tightening needs energy delivered deeper so the tissue contracts, which is what radiofrequency microneedling does. If laxity is your main concern, a series of this will disappoint you.
Is it safe for darker skin?
Mechanical microneedling does not depend on light being absorbed by pigment, so it is generally a reasonable option across skin tones. The risk that does apply is pigmentation during healing, so depth is moderated, passes are not stacked, and sun protection afterward is mandatory.
Can I wear makeup afterward?
Not on the day. The channels close over the following hours and you do not want pigment sitting in them. From the next day a clean mineral product is usually fine. You will be given specific timing.
What should I avoid before and after?
Stop retinoids and acids for several days before and arrive without makeup or a fresh tan. Afterward, no gym, sauna or hot shower for about 48 hours, no active skincare until cleared, no direct sun.
What does it cost?
Priced per session and per package, since this is a series. The blood-draw add-on is priced separately because of the draw and processing. Full numbers at the consult. Financing is available through Cherry.

Book the series, and book it for skin quality.

Microneedling is good at texture, scarring and tone, and honest about not being a tightening treatment. The consult confirms which of those your skin needs and whether an add-on blood draw belongs in the plan.
