Laser hair removal and IPL in Chatsworth.

Two light based treatments with two different jobs. DiolazeXL reduces unwanted hair over a series. Lumecca IPL clears sun damage and visible vessels. Both depend on settings, and the settings depend on your skin.

Light absorbed by a target, turned into heat.

Both treatments work the same way. Light goes into the skin, a target absorbs it, and that energy becomes heat which damages the target while sparing the tissue around it. In DiolazeXL, a diode laser beam passes toward the hair follicle, pigment in the hair absorbs it, and the heat reaches the root and prevents future growth. In Lumecca, intense pulsed light is absorbed by brown pigment clusters and by hemoglobin in small vessels, breaking up age spots and collapsing visible capillaries.

The limitation is that light cannot tell the pigment you want treated from the pigment in your skin, and that one fact decides nearly everything here. Laser hair removal needs pigmented hair, so it does very little for grey, white or fine blond hair. It also needs the follicle in an active growth phase, which is why one session never finishes the job and why sessions are spaced rather than stacked. IPL has the opposite constraint: its broad spectrum is readily absorbed by pigment in the skin itself, so it is not the right tool for deeper skin tones and is not used that way here. A tan is a temporary version of the same problem.

The devices are not interchangeable. DiolazeXL combines high peak power with a large treatment spot, so legs or a back take roughly fifteen to twenty minutes rather than the much longer sessions older devices needed. It exists to reduce hair. Lumecca is a photofacial for brown spots, sun damage and vascular redness, and does nothing for texture, lines or laxity. Asking one to do the other's work is why people leave light treatments disappointed.

Whether this is the right treatment for you.

Worth booking if

  • Unwanted hair dark enough for a laser to target
  • Repeat shaving, waxing or ingrown hairs you want to stop dealing with
  • Brown spots and sun damage on the face, chest, hands or arms, for Lumecca
  • Facial redness and small visible vessels, for Lumecca
  • You can space sessions properly and stay out of the sun between them

Probably not if

  • Grey, white or very fine blond hair, which a laser cannot target
  • Deeper skin tones for IPL specifically, where the pigment risk is not acceptable
  • A recent tan, sunburn or upcoming heavy sun exposure
  • You have waxed or plucked recently, since laser needs the root present
  • You are pregnant, or taking a medication that makes skin photosensitive
  • You want texture, lines or laxity improved

What happens in the room.

  1. Skin assessment and a test

Skin tone, recent sun exposure, medications and hair color are reviewed, and the settings follow from that. For hair removal you will have shaved beforehand and not waxed or plucked, because the beam needs the hair shaft below the surface to carry heat to the root. Eye protection is worn by everyone in the room, including you.

  2. The passes

For DiolazeXL the handpiece moves in overlapping sections with contact cooling against the skin, which is most of what makes it tolerable. The sensation is a warm snap, and large areas go quickly because the spot size is large. For Lumecca you get a bright flash with each pulse, like a light elastic snap, over cooled gel.

  3. Immediately after

Redness and warmth are normal and usually subside within about an hour. After Lumecca, treated brown spots darken over a day or two then flake away, and vessels fade over several days. After hair removal, treated hairs shed over one to three weeks, which looks like regrowth and is not. Sunscreen goes on before you leave.

Laser Hair Removal and IPL questions.

Does it hurt?
DiolazeXL has one of the largest built in cooling surfaces among hair removal devices and most patients describe it as close to painless, a warm snap per pulse. Lumecca feels like a light elastic snap. Coarse hair in sensitive areas is felt more than fine hair on a leg.
How many hair removal sessions will I need?
Hair is reduced with each treatment and results are observed after four to six sessions. The number varies with hair color, hair type, body area and skin tone. Spacing matters as much as the count, since only follicles in an active growth phase respond.
How many Lumecca sessions?
Improvement is often visible after the first session, and clearance commonly takes one to three sessions where a standard IPL would take more. It depends on severity, skin type, whether the target is pigment or vessels, and the energy used.
Is it safe for my skin tone?
That is the first question at the assessment, and it differs by device. A diode laser such as DiolazeXL can be used across a wider range of skin tones with adjusted settings and cooling. IPL carries an unacceptable risk of burns and pigment change in deeper skin tones, so it is not offered that way here.
Will it work on grey or blond hair?
No, and you should hear that before you pay for a package rather than after session three. The laser targets pigment in the hair. Grey, white and very fine blond hair has too little for the light to act on.
What can go wrong?
Burns, blistering and pigment change in either direction, and loss of pigment can be lasting. These follow treating tanned skin, wrong settings, or photosensitizing medications. Blistering, crusting or escalating pain should be reported to the clinic.
What do I have to do beforehand?
For hair removal, shave the day before and do not wax, pluck or thread for several weeks, because the root has to be there. For both, no sun, no tanning beds, no self tanner, and clean skin with no makeup, deodorant or lotion in the area.
Why do my hairs look like they are growing back?
Because they are being pushed out, not growing in. Treated hairs shed over roughly one to three weeks and it looks like regrowth while it happens. Do not wax or pluck them. Shaving is fine.
What does it cost?
Hair removal is priced by area and by package, since it is a series. Lumecca is priced by area and session. You are quoted at the consult once the area and session count are established. Financing is available through Cherry.

The assessment decides the device and the settings.

Hair reduction and pigment clearance are different treatments with different constraints, and your skin tone sets the safe parameters for both. A consult establishes which applies to you, if either does, and how many sessions to plan.
